The UK Standard Visitor Visa is the official name of the visit permit for the UK.
You are permitted to do any of the following in the UK with a Standard Visitor visa:
- A holiday
- To go on vacation
- Pay a visit to family
- Get together with friends
- Travel through or “transit” to another nation
- Participate in a meeting
- Participate in an interview
- Participate as a volunteer for up to 30 days with a recognized organization.
- Participate in a program for school exchange
- Do a placement, take a test, or study for up to six months in a UK-accredited university.
- Enroll in a 30-day-long recreational course (like a dance course).
- For health-related reasons
- During a sabbatical, a professor from an academic institution abroad may engage in official exchanges or do their own research.
- A dentist or senior doctor may engage in clinical practice (so long as it is not on a permanent basis), educate, or participate in research.
When to Apply
Depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa online before your trip to the UK if you need one.
Three months before the day you want to travel to the UK is the earliest you can apply. For up to six months, a Standard Visitor Visa costs £95.
As an ordinary tourist, you are typically permitted to stay in the UK for up to six months. In specific situations, you might be allowed to apply for a longer stay.
A long-term visit visa (multiple entries) for the UK permits a number of visits lasting up to six months each over the course of two, five, or 10 years.
